The Static Dynamic are a five piece progressive post-rock band from Boston. Combining ambient guitars with ethereal piano and driving rhythms, The Static Dynamic are a juxtaposition of light and dark. Formed in 2007 by Jess (Petty Morals/Mellow Bravo), and Steph (Marianas/Goddess of My Religion), they released a record, played out all over Boston and the surrounding area, and then took an indefinite hiatus.

Fast forward to 2013, the new incarnation of The Static Dynamic was born and work on new material began. The bands first single “Relentless” made its debut in the fall of 2014 across several local radio stations. Shortly after the release, The Static Dynamic was asked to perform in the 2015 Boston Rock n’ Roll Rumble – one of the most revered battle of the bands in the country.

Keeping the momentum going, the band just released a follow up single, “Spotlight”. The band is currently finishing up a 4 song EP at New Alliance Studios in Cambridge, MA while playing regionally across New England.

The Static Dynamic Interview

HypeFeeder: Would you care to introduce yourself for our audience? What is your name and what do you do?

The Static Dynamic: My name is Mark Avery and I play Bass in The Static Dynamic!

HypeFeeder: What is the band up to at the moment? Is there something you’re working on currently?

The Static Dynamic: Right now a majority of our focus, if not all, is on “The Rock & Roll Rumble”. Its a legendary competition held every year in the city of Boston. Its 3 rounds of competition between a lot of great local bands. Its over 35 years old and has seen its fair share of amazing bands come through its doors. We are extremely honored to be part of this. Our Semifinal round is tomorrow night, so stay tuned to see how we do! We also just released a new single called “Spotlight”.

HypeFeeder: Tell us about the music you make, how would you describe your sound?

The Static Dynamic: This is one of those questions that is hard to answer. Straight forward hard driven rock with piano’s and atmospheric ambiance at times? Does that make sense?

HypeFeeder: Can you talk about your production process? How do you go about writing new material?

The Static Dynamic: Sometimes our guitarist, Steph, will come in with a whole song she programmed and we take it from there. Sometimes one of us will have a riff or Kyle will have a drum beat and we build off of that.

“We are all products of growing up in the grunge era…”

HypeFeeder: How did the recording process go? Can you tell more about your time in the studio recording your latest material?

The Static Dynamic: It was great. We worked with our good friend Kyle (not our drummer Kyle) in an amazing studio here in Boston. Everything was super low key and fun but we were also very focused. We recorded four songs in one weekend so we were getting things done!?

HypeFeeder: You recently released a new single “Spotlight”, what’s the song about and what are the concepts behind it?

The Static Dynamic: That’s a great question for Jess our singer, but I would have to say, like any piece of music, its all up to you and how you interpret it. What one person may get from a song or lyric may differ from another person. That’s the beauty of music!

HypeFeeder: What and who are some of your major influences? Please give a few details about what you enjoy about creating music and what inspires you to make it.

The Static Dynamic: Oh man! As a band I think we are influenced by so much. We are all products of growing up in the grunge era so that had an impact on all of us as musicians. But we all listen to so much different music. From Death Metal or Hardcore, to ambient or classic rock, dance and pop music thrown in there as well. Its a melting pot. As far as creating music, there is no better feeling than getting in a room with 4 of your friends and making music that hundreds if not thousands of people enjoy.

HypeFeeder: What’s your favorite thing about playing live?

The Static Dynamic: Everything? haha! My favorite thing is getting up there as a band and putting your entire soul into your performance. Not faking it and really putting yourself out there. If you do that, people will notice and know you aren’t faking it and appreciate what you are doing. Whether they like your music or not, they can still say you got up there and gave it your all.

HypeFeeder: Have you played any shows or toured alongside any major artists? Are there any shows that come to mind that you feel make a great story? If so, tell us about it.

“Beer, Traffic, Playing in a Band!”

The Static Dynamic: We are still kind of a baby band. Although we have played in a band together for close to 2 years, we really have only been playing shows for about a year. So we are still finding ourselves as a band. But to date, I would say our best performance was the Preliminary round of the Rock & Roll Rumble we played recently. We flipped a switch and went out there and played solid. So much that we moved on to the next round! But it felt REAL good as a band.

HypeFeeder: Is there any band or artist you would give anything to play a show with? If so, who are they and why?

The Static Dynamic: We just enjoy playing shows with other great artists. I cant really think of any band specifically, I’m sure it would differ member to member, but if an opportunity came along we would absolutely take it.

HypeFeeder: What’s next for 2015?

The Static Dynamic: Like I said before, we are part of the Rock & Roll Rumble so we will see where that takes us. But besides that we are always working on new music. We have a few more tracks of an EP to release then will hit the studio again later this year. We are real excited as a band right now and we want to capitalize on that with some sweet jams!?

HypeFeeder: Do you have any big plans for the rest of the year???

The Static Dynamic: I think we will start playing out more and definitely going back in the studio. Who Knows? That could change tomorrow.

HypeFeeder: What are you hopes for the future? Where do you see yourself as an artist this time next year or the year after?

The Static Dynamic: To always grow and keep things fresh, keep playing great shows and growing as a band and as friends. I hope in a year from now we are more established, or known as a great live band with killer tunes.

HypeFeeder: If I was to turn up at a show, what should I expect from you in terms of music and showmanship? Is there any crazy stuff you do to pull the crowd?

The Static Dynamic: We do a lot of crowd participation now as part of our show. Lots of singing and clapping. Also I’ve been known to throw my bass around my body a few times a show so that’s always a good time! As far as musicianship, its the reason I joined this band. We all make each other better and try to be the best musicians possible. Otherwise it would be boring.

HypeFeeder: What do you think about music piracy, do you think it effects music sales negatively, or do you think there is another cause behind the current drop in record sales?

The Static Dynamic: Yea I mean, people just aren’t buying records anymore. I’ll be the first to tell you I download all my music. Its just the way it is now and I don’t really see it changing anytime soon. Although I am a fan of the Vinyl comeback. But I will say that I think its good for fans of music. I have discovered more bands that I love, which then makes me want to see them live. I think its just the way you look at it.

HypeFeeder: There is a lot of talk about the downfall of the music industry as a whole, do you believe this is the case, or do you believe it is evolving? What do you feel could improve the situation???

The Static Dynamic: I think its evolving for sure. And it will evolve again and again. Unfortunately as a band you aren’t going to make millions off of record sales. All your money is in touring and everything else. That’s just the way it is. But that being said, as long as there is some young kid listening to some band he or she really likes and being influenced to pick up an instrument like we all were, then the music industry will never die.

HypeFeeder: Do you receive much fan mail, and if so what’s the craziest, creepiest or coolest thing you’ve ever gotten from a fan?

The Static Dynamic: Haha! no fan mail. But we did finish a set one time and a kid from another band was losing his mind over our guitar players pedal board. Like total fanboy type stuff.

HypeFeeder: Name one thing you love, one thing you hate and one thing you think everyone should try at least once before they die?

The Static Dynamic: Beer, Traffic, Playing in a Band

HypeFeeder: If you could have one wish, what would it be and why?

The Static Dynamic: Have an unlimited amount of gear for free because nice things cost money haha.

HypeFeeder: Thank you for taking the time to speak to us about what you do. Do you have any final words, or anything you would like to add?

The Static Dynamic: Yes. Thank you for listening to our band. It means the world to us.
