Doomwave band Blood Sugar Summer‘s début record is called Birthed By Wolves is due out shortly, we caught up with them to talk about it.
Blood Sugar Summer are an English duo consisting of Benjo James (vocals/programming) and Jack Wilson (guitars). They hail from Northumberland, and their unique blend of doom metal and synth-pop (dubbed ‘doomwave’).
Blood Sugar Summer Interview:
Metal Empire: Would you care to introduce yourself and the band for our audience?
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: I’m Benjó James. I do vocals and programming in Blood Sugar Summer.
Blood Sugar Summer – JW: I’m Jack Wilson and I play guitars.
Metal Empire: What is the band up to at the moment? Is there something you’re working on currently?
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: ‘Birthed By Wolves’. It’s amazing.
Metal Empire: You’re just about to release a new record can you tell us a little bit about it?
Blood Sugar Summer – JW: We just tried creating a collaboration of all the music we loved and ruined the whole lot…we hope.
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: It’s called ‘Birthed By Wolves’. It’s representative of our Doomwave sound, pretty much traversing everywhere between doom metal and synth-pop.
Metal Empire: Can you talk about your production process? How do you go about writing new material?
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: We’re a studio based band, so we’ll write songs individually then just lay them down.
Blood Sugar Summer – JW: …well it either starts with Benjo writing the keys and backing track then I add distortion, clean guitars etc, or I play and Benjo adds. That’s our function…no function what so ever really.
Metal Empire: Has anyone in the band ever released music before, or is this a new experience for all of you?
Blood Sugar Summer – JW: Yeah, nothing special, but we have unfortunately with Blood Sugar Summer…I don’t want to talk about it. Benjo got death threats…caused a bit of calamity. We didn’t care though. It was a good laugh.
Metal Empire: Can you talk about the themes and ideas behind the record?
Blood Sugar Summer – JW: The real idea was to be extreme and to be the serious jokers as it seems. There’s as much light as there are dark themes.
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: I tend to marry themes of beauty and tragedy, whether it’s detailing the short life of a young supermodel or the ghost of a coked-up club girl. Or I just write about wolves. Wolves are metal as fuck.
Metal Empire: Is there any band or artist you would give anything to play a show with? If so, who are they and why?
Blood Sugar Summer – JW: Toughy, there’s quite a few. I’ll go with Layne Stayley. Chains are near the top of my list and he’s probably the coolest looking guy that I’ve seen.
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: Type O Negative, but for obvious reasons that’s not going to happen. I’d love to play with HIM, as they’re a massive influence on us.
Metal Empire: What are you hopes for the future? Where do you see yourself as an artist this time next year or the year after?
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: I see us being the biggest band in the world.
Metal Empire: How do you feel about being DIY musicians in today’s music industry?
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: Great, I love it. There’s complete artistic freedom and with the internet being as it is you get to share some brilliant music.
Blood Sugar Summer – JW: It feels like I have more freedom. I’ve been in bands where things have just been turbulent and infantile. To be honest this is the only band I’ve taken part in 100%. I believe what we are doing stands for more than a golden ‘ultimate pub band’ award.
Metal Empire: Do you receive much fan mail, and if so what’s the craziest, creepiest or coolest thing you’ve ever gotten from a fan?
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: A guy once messaged me on Facebook asking if he could buy my urine. Does that count?
Metal Empire: If you could have any super power what would it be?
Blood Sugar Summer – JW: Telekinesis…it would come in handy if I’m ever antagonised.
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: The ability to be amazingly good-looking. Oh wait, I’ve already got that one.
Metal Empire: If you could only hear one more song for the rest of your life what would you choose?
Blood Sugar Summer – BJ: ‘Haunt Me’ by Furns. They’re a Danish dream-pop group.
Blood Sugar Summer – JW: ‘Sultans of Swing’ probably. I hate listening to the same song twice or more within the space of a few hours. That’s why I’m starting to dislike some of our music…just temporarily, like.
Metal Empire: Thank you for taking the time to speak to Metal Empire about what you do. Do you have any final words, or anything you would like to add?
Blood Sugar Summer – JW: Keep safe, see you soon.
