An interesting batch of names have come together for an Indiegogo-funded project that promises to define “the future of the music industry”.
Titled The Birdcage, the project is attempting to release an album via the medium of a video game. Sounds kinda screwy, we’ll admit, but rather than be a lazily cobbled together add-on for a throwaway game, the team behind The Birdcage states flatly that this will “not be a soundtrack for the game, and the game will not be a casual click around game. The two will be a truly integrated product.”
Boasting a plot loosely based on the Beauty And The Beast fairytale (presumably without the signing teacups from the Disney version), the game will be available on Android, iOS and PC through Google Play, iStore and Steam, and aims to be an immersive experience which adds to the music, rather than provide a platform for it.
With a cast of rock and metal veterans and some rather Hollywood sound effects personnel involved, it certainly looks like a bold attempt at an entirely new way of distributing music. Quite how it’ll pan out or how gamers will take to the format remains to be seen, but if you want to find out more info or donate to the cause, head over to the project’s Indiegogo page.
