Mastodon: back in 2014

In our brand new issue, out now, we chat to Mastodon about their highly anticipated follow-up to magnificent 2011 opus, The Hunter.

“I’ve spent a lot of time writing over the last six months, trying to come up with new ideas,” says guitarist Bill Kelliher. Every Mastodon record seems to have a different flavour – we don’t want to keep on releasing the same record over and over again. We’ve got to surprise our fans; we’re always moving and growing.

“My stuff tends to be all over the place, there’s some simple rock grooves going on but there’s also that early, low-tuned heaviness we used on Remission [the band’s debut from 2002]… there’s some really sludgy things going on. There’s a song I wrote that’s low, heavy and insidious. Brann [Dailor, drums] thinks it sounds like Darth Vader’s Imperial March theme.”

For more from that eye-opener and other exclusive 2014 previews including chats with Slipknot, Machine Head, Black Label Society, Slayer, While She Sleeps, Opeth, Suicide Silence and more, grab our new issue now.
